Montana Obstetric and Maternal Support (MOMS)

Overview of the MOMS Program

In 2019, the DPHHS MOMS Program, in partnership with Billings Clinic and the University of Montana, received the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) State Maternal Health Innovation (SMHI) grant. In 2024, DPHHS was re-awarded a five-year SMHI grant to sustain projects from the previous funding cycle.

The purpose of the MOMS Program is to improve maternal health outcomes and reduce severe maternal mortality (SMM) in Montana by:

  1. Increasing access to comprehensive healthcare and community-based support from the preconception through postpartum period;
  2. Enhancing state maternal health surveillance systems and data capacity and;
  3. Implementing interventions to innovatively and measurably improve outcomes for maternal populations that experience maternal disparities, including rural residents and American Indians/Alaska Natives (AI/AN).

The MOMS Program guides the multidisciplinary collaboration of maternal and perinatal health providers, programs, and initiatives to deliver training, resources, and support to rural professionals in Montana as they care for perinatal patients.
