Apostilles
Apostilles & Authentications
If you are using a Montana birth or death certificate, or a marriage/divorce search letter in a foreign country, you may be required to obtain an Apostille.
While the Office of Vital Records issues the official documents, the Secretary of State performs the Apostille/Authentication.
How to Request an Apostille
To ensure a smooth process between our two agencies, please follow these steps:
- Request Your Document: Submit your application for a birth/death certificate or marriage/divorce search to the Office of Vital Records.
- Mark Your Application: Please clearly note on your application that the document is intended for an Apostille. Please note, a long form will be issued when an apostille is requested for a birth or death certificate.
- Coordinate with the Secretary of State: Contact the Montana Secretary of State’s Office to let them know a certificate or search letter is being prepared for authentication.
- Manage Separate Fees: * To Vital Records: Pay the standard certificate/search fee.
- To Secretary of State: Pay the $10.00 fee per Apostille.
- Important: Do not combine these payments. Each agency requires its own separate check or money order.
